Dream of Flying

coffeechatThis week Leslie wants to talk about if we are more worried about doing things right, or doing the right things? in her Coffee Chat. You know this is actually pretty easy to answer for me: I always worry (to a point) of doing the right thing, because it is part of my German heritage, being a perfectionist. But, then again, just because somebody says it is right does not necessarily mean it is right, right? Although if it is right for me, I think that is a pretty good start to doing the right thing. Hmm, not sure if all that sounds right. But then again, I am not too worried about doing things right – LOL – yep, I am one who likes to improvise, wing it and wing it good. So, that it ‘looks’ good, perfect and nobody actually notices, except for very close friends, maybe. I usually do not like to follow a straight line, yet I do like straight lines. As a guide, but not as a rule. I am German and rules have their reason (that is in my German blood!), but there can be too much of… just about everything. So, basically – get to know the rules, the reason, evaluate what people think is the right thing and then do what feels right to you, the best way you can and do not worry too much about it anymore. That is pretty much me. Today’s me. Way back is a different story.

songography

And ‘way back’ is my prompt for this week’s Song-ography. Kathy’s You’ll-shoot-your-eyes-out  has given us a joker, a freebie, our choice of song. Yay!! So, the few people reading this blog that actually know me in real life are probably expecting something like Pearl Jam, U2, The Alarm (hmm, maybe I should rethink my choice…), Nirvana, GreenDay or, phew, too many to name. So, I will actually do something different and go back, way back into the 70s and 60s. Yes, I will give you two songs and one picture. Oh, and Kathy, I am sure you know at least one of the two.

o.k. the first song is a 60s song of a pretty famous German singer. Der Traum vom Fliegen by Alexandra, who tragically died aged 27 in a car accident before she could make it to fame in the US. But I bet she would have. With that voice and talent and, yes, looks? A voice that gives me the chills whenever I listen to her songs (which is admittedly not that often). Sorry, but I did not find an English recording of any Alexandra song, so you will have to live, if you choose to, with the German version. Click right here and you will see an English translation of the lyrics with a little extra – they are worth it, promise, you won’t regret it 🙂

And the second song is You light up my life. The original by Kasey Cisyk for the film of the same name (lip synched by Didi Conn), but brought to fame by Debby Boone. Who, I just found out – thanks to Google and IMDB, was born just around the corner from here and is the daughter of Pat Boone, married to the son of Jose Ferrer, and her spouse is 1st cousin to George Clooney – wow. Anyways, I saw the film way back and I don’t remember it, but the song stuck with me. And the 1st time she hits the highs in the refrain still gives me the chills – totally cheesy, but oh so beautiful. There are many of her versions available on YouTube and also many other versions by the likes of Whitney Houston or LeAnn Rimes, but I chose this one, because it has a very original 70s feel to it.

  1. you sure hit the nail on he head. I’m so much the same way when it comes to doing he right thing and doing things right. I’ll have to tell the kids about this German singer since my youngest shares a name with her. Never heard of her before. The things you learn through blogging. 🙂

    • Thank you, Susi. Well, Alexandra was way before your time. She even was before my time, died when I was baby/toddler, so no worries if you don’t know her. And I agree ‘the things you learn through blogging…’

  2. Beautiful and full of emotion voices – that’s what I love. Pure singers I call them – not the mixed and synthesized voices we hear today often.

I think I totally get you…. I like to see the straight line too. and then I determine how closely, or how far off I will follow it. 🙂

  3. I don’t know either song but I’m enjoying these videos.
I love what you said about doing things right. So often, I wing things. I improvise. Other times, I’m diligent as all heck.

    • Both songs (singers) really happened before your time, Tamara, so no worries and they are certainly not everyone’s cup of tea. Heck, most of the times I do not listen to this kind of music, but… there is a time for everything. Kind of like what you are saying about improvising and being diligent – pretty similar.

  4. Oh my…this has such a magical quality to it. Fantastic capture, thought, creativity and editing! And perfect song choice too :). Thanks for joining in at Song-ography. Also, I am going to be in Berlin for a few days in December. I was wondering if you had any suggestions of must-do’s, must-see’s, or must-eat’s :). Not sure what part of Germany you are from…so this might be akin to asking a Philly girl advice about Hawaii, haha. Thanks!

    • Thank you so much, Kathy. I know my song choice was a bit … on the different side…
Oh, you’re going to Germany? Wow – nice! Although December… brrrh, cold. But I’m sorry, I am no help with Berlin. Yes, I visited, a couple of times, but that’s it. So, I am a real tourist there, too, and cannot give you any insider tips. But being December you should definitely check out their Christmas market, I am sure there’ll be one (or more) around. That is always fun in December in Germany.
