On track with a powerful Journaling App: Day One

“Every day may not be good… but there’s one good thing in every day!” ~ Alice Morse Earle

onegoodthing week #3

It is Sunday night and week #3 of #onegoodthing is on its way. This is my recap of the week gone by. Well, actually it is my sharing it with you. Because if it were just for me then it would be in my journaling app only.

I don’t write a traditional journal, because, well, let’s just say I don’t. I started to carry around an art journal with me, since I rekindled my love for drawing, but I don’t feel like carrying a second book. But towards the end of last year I wanted to start a gratitude journal. To actually write down what I was grateful for any given day.

So, what did I do? I searched for a journaling app for my iPhone. There’s about a ton of them – no real surprise, I know. And I don’t really remember why, but I settled for Day One. Wait, actually, I do remember, it was the design. There was another contender I downloaded and tried, but Day One turned out to be the one for me. It’s makers just released a major update and I love it. You can do text entries, photos, videos, music, date, location, fitness (all through your iPhone IF you allow access) and you have different views of all entries like list, calendar and mosaic (like Pinterest), which ever way you fancy. Oh, and you may also have more than one journal, should you want that.

For me even one is plenty. I confess I am not very consistent in writing an entry. There are days, even weeks, when I am too caught up in my daily life that I totally forget about Day One. I guess that is what separates me from a writer, who would sit down and write down their thoughts.

Anyway, I just thought I would share with you a handy dandy journaling app, Day One, which I am now using as the basis for this post.

Monday– after a day at the office I came home to a clean kitchen. No, not one I cleaned the night before, but one that hubby cleaned 🙂 And I made almond cranberry power balls, a great healthy snack for the week ahead

Tuesday / Wednesday – Long and pretty stressful days at work made me start zendoodling again at night before going to bed. There is just something about this detailed linework that I find very mind calming. And it also helps that I like the result on paper

Thursday – I left work somewhat on time at 5:30 pm and was positively surprised that it was still almost daylight out. The dark season is over. Well, almost, it is freaking cold! Oh, and then we had our ‘cocktail Grimm night’. For the past month or so we decided to really cut back on wine and bubblies, but we are still having our Thursday cocktail mixing followed by an episode of Grimm via Netflix. Traditions…

Friday – we had sushi! Need I say more?

Saturday – blogging, commenting, working on our game – quite a bit actually, and I also grabbed my pencils to draw another face with five colors only and I made my own trail mix. I hate raisins and pretty much every trail mix has them in it, I substitute them with dried cranberries. At night we watched 007 / Spectre. Have you seen it? What did you think?

Sunday – happy that the pipes didn’t freeze at -18°C / 0°F. Today’s temperature high was -8°C, I am typing this while enjoying glancing at our fireplace and feeling the cozy warmth. And I am also happy that we have tomorrow off. It is Presidents’ Day here in the US and some companies, incl. ours, observe it and are closed. YAY!

Now, tell me, how has your week been? Any small or big things that happened and you’d like to share with us? We’d love you to link up!

I hope that over time we will be building a community dedicated to art and creating. I rather like these words said by Andy Warhol:

Don’t think about making art, just get it done.

Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it.

While they are deciding, make even more art.”

Why don’t you join me along my journey and follow me on fbgo and tw if you prefer and see what I come up with next. You may, of course, also [et_bloom_inline optin_id=”optin_3″]

  1. Great post. Thanks for sharing about the journaling app. I started looking into one of those as well, for the same reasons. Sometimes, I’m grateful for something that I can’t take a picture of but want to remember in some way. I’ll have to check it out. Any day you can have sushi is a good day for sure. 🙂 Enjoy your day off tomorrow. I know I will.

  2. That’s a pretty heart! Busy week! I elected to GIVE myself President’s Day off. LOL. It is snowing here and we are expecting ice so I figured why tempt fate? Stay home. That is my one good thing so far. That I used common sense. 😉

  3. I also don’t use a traditional journal. I never really have, preferring oddball other ways to get it all out.
I totally use my phone, though. And voice command. I must look silly in public.
I’m happy our pipes didn’t freeze either. It was -11 here last night. Both cars didn’t start, but luckily not at the same time.
I’m happy about the later sunsets. They always make me incredibly happy.

    • Yep, voice command – am totally doing that, too. Siri is really good, no matter if English or German 🙂
-11 F is too low for me to imagine. Correct that – I don’t want to imagine, much less experience that. We stayed inside all weekend. Luckily we didn’t need to go anywhere.

  4. Oh I loved the 007 movie but then I love all the Bond movies, except for the Timothy Dalton ones. The hubs and I decided for lent this year to give up the adult drinks until Easter. While we are doing really well thus far, I have to admit, it’s been good and bad. I hope you have had a great day off today. My office was open but I took the day myself. 🙂

    • You know, in the end I didn’t mind Timothy Dalton so much, but it has been so long I really need to see the films again. My favorite, being 80s and all, was, of course Mr. Remington Steele/Pierce Brosnan, the prefect tough gentleman for the role. Daniel Craig played, let’s just say, a very different Bond and it sounds like he won’t be Bond for too much longer…
It’s great to hear that you are doing well on your lent. Until Easter is a long time. We are doing 5 or 6 out of 7 days with no adult drinks, that is working and good enough for us. But no time limit, especially since we’ll be going on vacation in a few weeks 🙂

  5. I see wood, sky and sun!!! Love that we both choose a tree shot. 🙂
And I kinda want that haircut that’s on your lady drawing. It looks perfect with her face. Although I don’t think my face is the same shape, I still like it. It’s a bit edgy.
I love collecting actual journals, but even though I may consider myself a writer, the truth is I have about 4 still waiting to be used in my desk drawer — which means I am not writing in them enough! And of course the thought of having one on my phone sounds absolutely grand. I might have to try. OH!!! It might be neat to keep a fitness journal during these 21 days of program I am doing! It might sound like a crazy person though – because I will probably be hangry from time to time! LOL

    • Yes, sun and trees! But your shot is a lot nicer than mine. This was just an iPhone shot when I left work. Hm, yeah, I don’t think your face is round like hers and don’t you have curls or wavy hair?
Collecting journals – I could totally do that, I love the feel of books, but, what would I do with them? I already have too many art journals. Your 21 day program sounds tough and awesome, I think holding yourself accountable e.g. with an app or in their community is a good way to stay with it. All the best, you’ll make it!

      • I do have wavy hair – so it would mean straightening all the time – which um, no. There’s not time for that!!! LOL
I have “work” journals – those are the ones that I do writing in that eventually makes it to the blog, or into a story. And then I have the “keeper” journals, and those are the ones that I copy my favourite pieces into or if I did a little doodle (because I can’t actually draw worth a darn). The keepers are always pretty and may have quotes and inspiring sayings or artwork on the pages too. But the rough drafts are just that – Rough!

        • You could still have a bob, also with wavy hair, but you need a good hairdresser, who takes those waves into account 🙂 Straightening all the time? No way! Bad for your hair and time management – hahaha.
Funny with those journals, that we sometimes think or feel they are too precious to be doodled in with rough sketches or writing. Pretty dumb really, because that is what they are there for.
