This week’s letter is ‘K’ for
~ Kralendijk ~
Kis most definitely not one of the most commonly used letters in English. And I have not been part of Alphabe- Thursday for — phew, oh so long… So, lets switch languages, shall we? O.k. not really, because I do not speak Dutch. Kralendijk however, originates exactly there. So, what is Kralendijk, I hear you ask. Well, Kralendijk is where we have been a few times already and will be again in the very near future. It is the main city and capital of Bonaire. Our Caribbean windsurfing paradise. Our winter escape. Our spring vacation spot. Kralendijk is not where we will be staying, because we will be right on Sorobon Beach our windsurfing spot. But I am sure we will be visiting Kralendijk every now and then to go for dinner or just a brief stroll through the harbor.
Maybe I’ll even visit one of the other cemeteries, who knows. Last year, when David broke his hand, I took a trip to the cemetery right in the center of Kralendijk. What a difference to European or American ones. Most, but not all, graves were above the ground – might have something to do with the water level, but I don’t really know. I am no expert, I only enjoy the silence, admire artwork and take photos. And in exactly that spirit I will leave you with a whole bunch of photos taken on last year’s trip to Bonaire. Cannot wait till the next one (with all the snow and cold around here)!
This is my contribution today to round 8 of Alphabe- Thursday hosted by Jenny Matlock.

An interesting insight into the local cementary (which I did not notice during my stay). Besides the silence of these places which I do also enjoy every now and then, your post also conveys a colourful preview of what you may expect in only a few weeks during your holiday. 🙂
Cheers, Michael
I cannot wait, Michael… not sure if I’ll go visit the cemetery again, or another one for that matter, it all depends on how things go.
wow – what an absolutely gorgeous, stunning place!!
No wonder you guys have repeat visits. I love that the houses are coloured! nice bright colours — I always wondered why we couldn’t do that here. Add a little spice to the suburbs, you know? All the houses look the same – there’s like 5 designs that just repeat all over the block. It gets boring.
I hope we get lots of fabulous pictures from your next trip — I’m sure we will 🙂
Yes, I am absolutely with you on ‘that little spice in the suburbs’. I really hate it when everything, everyone is so ‘uniform’. Very boring indeed. Well, next week might be the next time you will see new pictures from me. 5 days to go and so much to do
Beautiful colorful place! Loving the cemetery pictures. Interesting to see the use of color in the crypts, etc. Above ground burial usually happens when the water table is close to the surface or if the ground is not easily dug, so yes, I would say that this would be the case here. Thanks for sharing those pictures!
You know I took those pictures when you were doing your cemetery art pictures on my blog – wonderful series. And, yes, I am still in awe in the difference in colors
pretty monuments at the graveyard. I was also having trouble, looking for a word that started with K… {:-Deb
Thank you! K is not an easy thing in English, unless it is mis-spelled on purpose?!
Looks like paradise to me.
It does. And it is, at least as long as you are vacationing there 😉
That certainly does look like a beautiful vacation paradise! Your photography is wonderful.
Thank you so much, really appreciate it.
Wonderful shots, and I always love scenes from a cemetery.
=)
Thank you very much, Sue. Cemeteries are something special – in many ways.
Very interesting, great photos as well!
Thank you, Karen.
How did you know I was asking, “What is Kralendijk?” at that exact moment… It definitely looks like a place I would keep going back to!
I am glad you are keen to visit cemeteries… I like seeing the wonderful photographs but I’m too much of a wimp to go exploring in them!
Thanks for linking to the letter “K”.
