A turkey and a glass of wine at the beach

3rd week of November’s Art Every Day and also in NaBloPoMo

November 15th

Day #15 of AEDM and NaBloPoMo – halftime! Aaaand – the writing prompts are back: What are the best/worst dishes at Thanksgiving dinner?

I think the worst thing that happened once is that I wanted the turkey really done.  You know ‘chicken meat should be properly cooked’ and such. Which resulted in turkey meat that needed drowning in gravy. But since the gravy was yummy, all was good.

As for the best one, that has to be the home made cranberry sauce and the turkey itself. Imagine yourself to be confined to an oven half the size of those in America for all your life and then move to the US, go shopping and come home with a huge turkey that you have a hard time carrying and that would never, ever fit into a German oven. Then you research recipes over recipes, finally decide on one and just do it. Luckily, I have a very forgiving hubby, so I wasn’t too worried about messing up the turkey. And I shouldn’t have worried, because the turkey turned out just fine.

As a going home dinner for my friend, who left yesterday, we actually made a ‘Thanksgiving test turkey’ on Sunday. We went shopping at Trader Joe’s because she wanted to take home some goodies (I hope she made it through customs…) and bought a wonderful, organic young turkey of 16.6 lbs. I know, not very big by American standards, but perfect for us. We had dinner, then lunch yesterday, dinner last night, probably lunch (turkey sandwich) today and still have two portions in the freezer for turkey/veggie pie at a later time. As I said – perfectWith the turkey we had a glass of red wine. Unlike the photos below, showing a glass of white wine at the beach. A little break from my PNW photos series, as I took these at the Outer Banks.Cheers,

  1. Welcome to T, Claudia. So glad you chose to join us this week. I so enjoyed reading about your turkey tales, and seeing the lovely bird you fixed this week. It looks yummy, but so does your stuffing (my favorite).

Had to laugh at your oven woes, since I have a top oven (probably about the size of those in Germany) and a lower oven that will cook the turkey, yams, and green bean casserole at the same time.

That white wine at the beach is awesome. It makes me less cold to see the bubbles in the glass. So glad you shared this with us for T this Tuesday. And once again, welcome!

  2. Both the wine and the turkey look wonderful. I actually prefer to get a turkey around that size. We only have 8 people for Thanksgiving so that is plenty. I do stock up on turkeys while they are on sale and cook one about every 6 weeks during the winter, 🙂 Your beachy wine photos are gorgeous!!!!!
    Happy T day!

  3. Those wine photos are lovely! Our Thanksgivings have dwindled…Now this year it is just hubby and i… When the kids were growing up we had big affairs at my in laws where everyone brought something… love that! One year someone brought homemade icecream! I always brought deviled eggs… such a joy to see them gobbled up. Happy happy Tday! I hope you’ll be joining us for more Teas! Hugs! deb

  4. Good to see you for T Day Claudia! Your turkey looks amazing and I also will go for a smaller size this year as it’s always just TOO much even after giving out leftovers. And wine on the beach-goes without saying, but just heavenly. Happy T day!

  5. I do remember you spending about 15 minutes re-positioning the wine, to photograph it at just the right angle, and with the right waves in the background. Thank heavens you are NOT the sort of person to complain about warm white wine 🙂

  6. I don’t know which I like better. The turkey with the stuffing (my fave – made my way) spilling out or the glass of wine with the ocean in the background. They both have their appeal. I don’t think I’ve ever had a glass of wine at the beach… something I will have to rectify. 🙂

  7. I need a second Thanksgiving now! That turkey looks delicious – you should post the recipe. Christmas is fast approaching and that is turkey time too. Love the shots of the wine.
