Colorkey

There is a very effective way to emphasize colors in a picture, called colorkey. Basically you desaturate everything but the color you want to stand out. It is something that you are bound to come across when you start meddling with photo editing tools. But it is also one of those things that once you have done a few – you are done with. It is very, very easy to overdo. So, I haven’t done it for… years. But last week on a bicycle ride we rode past these trees that were shining so bright. And the street behind it was so ugly. Hence, o.k. I’ll give colorkey a shot, added some texture(s), et voila – here we are. And maybe in a few years I will do another colorkey. So, what do you think about colorkey?

  1. Oh Wow! I think I love colour key!
My neighbour across the street has a tree like this that is just bursting with colour. but all that would be in the background is the edge of their garage and some ugly barren trees. perhaps this technique would work for me if I took a pic?
    ok – but if I post it – don’t laugh !! haha I just have a crappy iphone 3 camera – I can’t work miracles. 🙂

I’ll have to go back and read about your trip – what a nice anniversary surprise!

    • You do, huh?! Give it a shot, it really may be something to work with for that scenario. In this case, as in many others, too, it is not the camera that makes the picture! And, of course, I won’t laugh (maybe giggle? – hahaha)

    • Thanks, Debbi. Looking at it here on my site, I personally think that I darkened the background a little too much. But it doesn’t really surprise me that you like that 😉 I guess, it is moody, which I do like.

  2. I found your blog by going back to Hilary’s and heading over from your link. That tree is gorgeous. We don’t get those kind of Fall colors here in Southern California. Sometimes we get a few in December that have some pretty color. I lived in Illinois until I was 38 and hopefully someday I will get to Central Park in New York to see the colors!
    Have a great weekend.

    • Thanks for making the journey back to my blog, Deborah, and leaving a comment! Southern California has got it’s beauties, too, and I would definitely not miss not having snow – LOL. But you are right, fall colors are something very beautiful. I actually missed it this year in Central Park and by now the wind will have blown all leaves away. Oh well, there is always a next year. Hope you’re enjoying your weekend, too!

  3. Love the picture. It really just makes the tree pop… I guess by now you are used to be back on a 8-5 schedule, huh? Wonder how long it will take me to get used to the new routine!!! 🙂 By the way, thanks for all your encouragement and positive thoughts, really makes me happy and appreciative!!!

    • Well, as used to as you can. There are times, when I am missing my space and time for creativity terribly. But… what can you do… You are very welcome, Susi, that’s what (virtual) friends are for 🙂
