Flower art and linkup on Saturday

Welcome to the weekend. Welcome to my flower art – Saturday  link up s~A(R)T~urday!

“The object of art is not to reproduce reality, but to create a reality of the same intensity.”
Alberto Giacometti

Last week I shot a lot of blurry photos. Say what? Yep, I did. In my Tuesday post I told you that I am taking part in another Google+ Mentorship to hone and fine tune my skills in photography. Never content in (or ‘possibly slightly bored with’) ‘just’ getting the perfect i.e. in focus shot, I have now entered the world of intentional camera movement, intentional blur. Not as a replacement obviously, but as an addition to take my photography further.

Why am I telling you this (again)? For one, because I urge every inspiring photographer that follows me here to check out Google+ Mentorships. The best way to start is to 1st get into Google + and 2) to follow G+ Mentorship Program, oh, and maybe 3) follow me, too. And also, apart from my blurry assignment photos, I painted a little and I did a collage, which something totally new and fun to me, but I am not ready to show these works to you yet. I guess I could have delved into the archives and pulled an older photo for today, but instead I’ll show you an iPhone edit I did and posted on Instagram.

Here is my almost original photo, I emphasized the blur, depth of field and cropped it square. It is our one and only daffodil in our mini front yard:

Then about two weeks later I came back to this image on my iPhone while being in physical therapy for my foot and started playing around with it in different apps.

And lastly I combined these photos, blended them with different modes and opacity and masking and came up with this one. Lastly added a small border picking up the purple in the corner and posted it on Instagram as my ‘psychedelic daffodil’.

Starting last week I adopted the idea to highlight the last entry of the previous week’s s~A(R)T~urday. I still think this is a great idea, however I have two issues with it. One actually concerns you, because – I confused a lot of you to think that Jen’s beautiful cloud image was actually mine. I think I corrected that misconception, but the damage was done.

And the second one is copyright infringement. To show the picture in my post, I will need to download it to my computer and upload it on my site. While I obviously don’t have any wrong intent and I am sure most if not all of you won’t have an issue with me doing this, I would really need to contact every artist for their permission. That in itself is not a problem, but – time. Therefore I will compromise and instead of putting up the last entry’s picture, I will link back to it on the artist’s site.

Please check out the Sue’s entry last week. It is actually her Wordless Wednesday post and it shows beautifully textured photos of different flowers Textures / Image-in-ing. If you love flowers, like I do, you will love her post. Check it out!

I hope that over time we will be building a community dedicated to art and creating. My personal medium is photography and photo art, but I do not want to put a limit on my art link up. Thus I encourage you to join me, no matter which your art form is.

Please do not be intimidated that I am calling this an art link up. I want you to share your creations. Art is completely subjective. It takes courage and time to realize that you may actually call your own creations art. If you believe they are pieces of art, I believe they are. They may be good or bad or great – who am I to say?! I’d rather like to think along these words from Andy Warhol:

Don’t think about making art, just get it done.

Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it.

While they are deciding, make even more art.”

Why don’t you join me along my journey and follow me on fbgo and tw if you prefer and see what I come up with next. You can, of course, also subscribe by email – (click) here or you may follow my blog with Bloglovin or my preferred reader Feedly.

Drop me a comment and you’ll make me smile!

  1. I love the textured, dimensional feel with your photo-art. Very creative! I need to try to do something like this. Right now, my creations seem quite similar. I guess I need to change things up.

    • Thanks, Cathy. Happy to hear you like them and feel inspired. However, you do not have to change things. As long as you’re happy with what you are doing and it works for you, keep on doing it.

  2. I like your edits! I am not sure I can remember exactly how I processed my photos for today’s post, but I had fun randomly playing 🙂

    • Sometimes I don’t remember 100 % either. In this case though I saved the steps in my iPhone, because I wasn’t entirely sure where I was going with it. Got to check out yours in a bit 🙂

  3. Thanks so much for sharing that group Claudia – it is now on my list to check out!
I love coming by each week to see what everyone does. Such awesome talent!

I’m glad that you tackled the topic of blurry photographs as every now and then I try to find a way to incorporate them into what I am doing too.

Have a wonderful weekend and hope you are almost ready to dance! 🙂

    • Thanks, Ramona and yes, definitely check out G+ mentorships. They are work (but it is work for yourself), but they are fun, too.

No dancing yet, but lots of bicycling 🙂 Have a great weekend!

  4. I love the different iterations of that flower…and how while so different, the soul of it is never lost in there. Great job playing around with them!

You know – when I share other’s photos, I have the option to add a photo via its link so I don’t have to download and the upload again. I just make sure that I edit the photo to have it link back to the original poster’s site. I also make sure that I clearly label it as not mine and edit the alt text and caption to make all of that clear. I suppose I hadn’t thought about doing anything more than that (checking with the other blogger). I’m going to have to think about that.

    • That is the idea and the challenge, to keep the feel of a daffodil.

True, I could insert the image manually through html code, too, but, honestly, the confusion last week… I felt bad every time someone commented on your beautiful cloud photo on my site. Oh well, this is still a pretty new linkup and I may change things again.

You are most likely o.k. to post as long as you give credit etc., especially if you ‘know’ the other blogger. But I have come across a lot of ugliness online and I just don’t want to take the chance.

  5. Psychedelic daffodil – I like that. I like what you did there and have started to play around with different apps too. I love using blossoms and flowers and adding different layers… Of course, I end up comparing what I have to your fabulous shots and then don’t like what I have! 😉

    • Comparing yourself to someone else is almost always a pretty bad idea. But I am guilty of doing that as well, I guess it is human. In a way it is also how we learn, how we make progress, but – it should never make you feel bad about what you did. I am sure if you compare what you are doing now to what you did a couple of years ago, you’ll be amazed.

p.s. And, thank you, Susi, for choosing my work to compare yours to 🙂

  6. LOL! NOW you understand my comments about taking crappy photos and turning them into art. The blurry photo and not so great pictures are actually what started me down the road to some of my artistic endeavors! I like the layering of your photograph! I’ve not done much layering. Looking forward to seeing your collages!

    • I don’t really think that you can turn truly crappy photos into art, unless it is bad art. But some accidents e.g. out of focus or intentional out of focus may on the other hand work wonders 🙂
The collages – we’ll see. Hey, you’re on Instagram and fb, I did post a collage of my collages there. Not sure if you saw them.
