Highline Park NYC with Tommie & Peti

How come almost Highline Park NYCalways is a dull and gray day when I visit the Highline Park NYC? Seriously, 70 % of the times that I have gone to the City the weather was hazy or rainy. No difference this time. Tommie and Peti, two of our best friends from German times visited us for a week at the beginning of October. They had lived here in the 90s (when they met David) and they obviously wanted to visit the City. Unfortunately the whole week of their stay was forecasted bad weather. Deciding on the least bad one, we made our way to town.

Highline Park NYCparking, NYCOur agenda was easy. Tommie wanted to drive in the City, can you believe it? He missed driving the streets of New York City! So, for once I was being chauffeured around, but I am not sure, if I enjoyed or rather relaxed while sitting in the backseat. What can I say: He drives like the ‘best’ NY cab driver. And unlike me he likes to drive around looking for a free parking spot on the road. We wanted to park close to the Highline Park NYC, which neither Peti, nor Tommie knew and my last visit was in spring with my nieces. So, we opted to park somewhere around 9th/10th Ave and between W26th and W30th street. And with perseverance we found a 2 hour spot right on the corner of 9th and W30th.

From here, one of the many entrances or stairways to the Highline Park NYC is only a block walking distance away. Ours was at the most northern end of the park. This gave us the opportunity to have a look north. Here you will see how the railway looks before the organization transforms it into a park: Overgrown, rusty and unsightly after more than 30 years of negligence.

An oasis made of a nice boardwalk, lined with rails, spotted with banks to rest and reminisce among the omnipresent multitude of plants and flowers. All this surrounded by New York City architecture. Skyscrapers made of metal and concrete next to old brick buildings. It doesn’t matter how often I come here, I will always get pictures of something ‘new’. Which both Peti and I did while we walked and stopped and walked some more up to the southern end of the park. Then we returned to our car on 9th Ave., slightly anxious if we were too late and we got a ticket. Thank God, we didn’t.

NYCNYCSince it was still only mid afternoon Tommie and Peti decided that they at least wanted to have a look the Freedom Tower. So, Tommie once again hit the gas and the increasing New York traffic, while Peti and I enjoyed the scenery. Sitting in the backseat, I was a real tourist. I rolled down the window often and snapped photos with my phone, a small collection of which landed on Instagram (you can check them out here) at once. After circling the Freedom tower once we made our way home. But not through the Lincoln or Holland tunnel, because both were now totally jammed and backed up due to rush hour. Instead we took the Joe DiMaggio Hwy and Henry Hudson Pkwy all the way up to the George Washington Bridge to cross the Hudson back to New Jersey. Well, I didn’t have to drive and Tommie and Peti both enjoyed identifying formerly unknown cars on the American market.

The week the two of them stayed with us flew by in lightning speed. We had: Good breakfasts & dinners at Hotel Willison, shopping trips, handymen work (sink repair), more shopping, exploring former work and living sites, games of CIV IV and, of course, Cinema Willison – now in New Jersey! Hope you enjoyed and will be back soon. Maybe with better weather at the Highline Park NYC 🙂

    • I guess it must be the City, huh?! No, there are nice days, but somehow I just happen to always pick a weird day. Glad to be back 🙂

  1. Great photos, thanks for sharing. I’ve never been there but would like to visit someday. Would not want to drive there! We drove to Chicago recently on a weekday and I thought for sure were were going to get in an accident several times. We decided from now on, we’ll take the train in.

How does one get out of a parking place like you showed in your photos?

    • That is kind of how I felt about NYC. Now that I’ve driven there a few times, it’s o.k. Out of that parking spot? With patience and a lot of back and forth – LOL
