ast year in October I was lucky enough to be able to go on a trip to Charleston, SC. Together with David I got to spend a a few days, a lot of it work related, but with time to spare. Naturally we did some sightseeing and I took a lot of photos.
Our trip to Charleston started as usual with a drive to Newark airport to fly to and finally arrive into Charleston around noon. We had pre-booked a tour of Fort Sumter, so we didn’t stay long in our wonderful hotel, the Charleston Place situated in the middle of Charleston’s historic district. Instead we called a riksha, stopped for a sandwich at a deli and waited in the Fort Sumter museum for the ferry to take us to the fort. It only takes half an hour for the boat trip, but no matter when and where I always enjoy being on the water.
On the second day our sightseeing trip to Charleston included a horse carriage tour through the old district. While this may sound cheesy it was in fact real nice. Our driver was pretty knowledgeable and enjoyed sharing it with us while we drove through the small back roads of the historic district.The evening was another highlight of our trip. A visit of the USS Yorktown including dinner on board the hangar deck. We could wander around the ship and enjoyed the beautiful sunset while being on the flight deck in between all different kinds of planes.
Business activities filled the following day except for a harbor tour by boat. I think I mentioned before that I love boat tours, right? This one was no different. We couldn’t always understand what the guide said through the loudspeakers, but I didn’t care, because most of it we had heard the previous days. So instead we concentrated on enjoying the scenery, the sunshine and warm breeze while sitting on the top floor. On a side note, I am pretty sure I would not want to sit in that sun during summer! Being mid October it was still hot, being so much further south. Another fun thing to watch out for while around these waters are dolphins. We saw some a couple of times. Magnificent!
The next day was the final one of our trip to Charleston. I wandered around town a little while David caught up on work, before having a late lunch with me. Later in the afternoon we left for the airport and arrived with a three hour delay back in Newark. Another trip over with, but hopefully not our last trip to Charleston, because it is a beautiful and old city with lots of history.
