Winter in NJ & Australia

Another snow storm is currently i.e. today hitting us, it is winter in NJ. I have lost count how many we have had this season and I don’t really care. But I have had enough of snow. And the next few days we are supposed to keep the really low (o.k. not that low for you Canadians!) temperatures. But I do admit that snow and ice and sunshine make for pretty pictures. Here are a few I took in and after one of the previous storms a couple of weeks back. One day the snow and freezing temperatures were paired with a strong wind, which made for some nice snow drifts.

After taking photos out in the cold, what is better than to be warming up inside, possibly next to a warm fire, hot beverage of choice and… a scanner. Yep, last weekend I finally, finally got a scanner. So that means that I am one step closer to getting the zillions of photos that I took before the digital age digitized, well, at least some of them. One batch at a time. And the first photos I test-scanned were from my time down under. Specifically one of the Christmas holidays, i.e. our winter = summer in Australia, that I spent with friends on their farm out in the bush in Victoria. Theirs was a sheep farm (a couple of scanned sheep photos are here in this post), whereas their neighbors had cattle. And of course, we went horseback riding. So, here I present you: Me, almost 20 years ago – look at the big pop-Swatch-watch and that perm – hahaha – high up on the back of a pretty tall, chestnut Australian thoroughbred called Adi (short for Adrenalin), my favorite horse – sigh. Cannot wait to scan more pictures from way back. But don’t worry, there is not going to be very many of me, since even back then: I was the photographer! 🙂

  1. If you get two comments from me, that’s because I’m feeling technically challenged here. I loved the contrast of this time of year in the Northern versus Southern Hemisphere. The icy cold imagery was stunning, and warmed up by the happy cows, and sunny days. Thank you for sharing.

    • Thank you so much, Jill! Well, really I have only started at the very tip of the iceberg called ‘non digitized images’ – LOL – but, well, the quality of the images is quite different, however the scanners got so much better. So maybe it was worth being lazy – ahem – waiting with the scanning.

  2. Winter is such a beautiful season. The light of winter is incomparable, it’s cold but bright and creating such interesting shadows. I wish I could enjoy it more! Love that you’re scanning forgotten treasures! That is a tedious task, but so rewarding at the same time. Oh! the memories! Thanks for sharing them with us xox

    • You and me both, Isabelle. I stand at my window looking outside thinking – whoah, it is soooo beautiful. But then going outside, walking around … only very briefly. And I am over winter by now, so it really needs spectacular if it wants to lure me outside. I seriously do not think I could survive Canada.

  3. What an amazing set of contrasts in these two collections. Both are beautiful for lots of different reasons. I have to admit to finding cows the most beautiful of creatures – so I especially love these images! Thank you for sharing 🙂

    • Thank you for your empathy, Sara. It has been dragging on for a while now. And while I have definitely had enough, I know there are some that endure this kind of weather for much, much longer. I just hope and pray that I will never have to move ‘there’ 😉 Hahaha – the perm, almost embarrassing, huh?!

  4. Claudia, your images of the winter you’re experiencing in NJ are beautiful! I laughed out loud when you mentioned that you have been in very few photos because you’re the photographer. I can relate. I recently gave my hubby my camera to take a picture of me and out boys, which we have very few of since I’m the photographer 🙂 Happy scanning!

    • Hahaha – yep, the photographer’s fate or curse? I have been trying to get my hubby to take some, but I am too much of a perfectionist and you know how self-critical we are… Not sure when I’ll get back to scanning, first I will need to get my computer working again.
