Yellow

This week’s letter is ‘Y’ for

~ Yellow ~

Yes may be the most often used word starting with a ‘y’, at least in the English language. However, yellow, being one of the primary colors, is not so far behind. It can be found in nature, beautiful yellow flowers and, of course, the sun and stars. It can also be found man madeĀ  in signs, houses, clothes, cars and more. I will show you a few examples.

The first ones are from our recent trip to the Outer Banks, NC. A yellow surfboard that stood out by itself against the ocean, but I thought I would increase the effect a little more. (Which is also the reason I am filing this post under fine art.)

This next one shows the primary colors of red, blue and yellow all in one parking lot, The Canadian Hole, on The Outer Banks. While I took this photo, David was out windsurfing, too far away to be seen or even photographed by me. So, looking around, sitting on the wooden plank you see in the left of the picture, I saw these yellow parking blocks lining up and thought, yeah – that might be a good picture. I have to admit that at that point I took in the barns and sky, however I did not relate it to the primary colors.

These are some man made examples of yellow surrounding us. And I am sure you can think of and find many more. Now how about nature? I have selected these two of my many flower pictures, can you guess why? While they are no sunflowers, I do think they bring a little sun to us, don’t you?

But if you absolutely need to see sunflowers and stars, I recommend you do a search on Google for Van Gogh, the old master painter. With the right keywords you will find these for example on this website:

Still Life Vase with 15 Sunflowers by Vincent Van GoghStarry Night by Vincent Van Gogh

When ever I see his Starry Night picture(s) I am in danger to start dreaming… and pretty soon I would hear the tune of Don McLean’s homage to him… Sigh – and off she went to search on YouTube. Finding 1) a slideshow of vanGogh’s paintings to the tune and 2) a live recording of Don McLean and his guitar in 1972! Enjoy – and dream away!

  1. Yellow is a great word! I almost did that one, but since I did xanthic last week and it means the same thing I decided to post something different.
I love the imagery of the surfboard photo! What a contrast the bright cheery yellow is against the gray and blue.

I love that version of Starry Night! Thanks for sharing it!

    • Thanks, Jamie! I rather like that one, too. I don’t think there are too many pics of parking lot curbs out there, hm, looking good – LOL

    • Nothing like bringing a little sun i.e. yellow into your daily life routine, right? Our bathroom and guestroom/office in Mannheim used to be soft yellow in different shades. Very nice.

  2. Yellow is a primary color and combined with other colors you can make quiet a lot of colors. I like to use yellow with red, which gives a nice orange, or with blue which makes green.
I wanted first to write about “Yes” . People who say “yes” to everything and everybody because it’s far easier to say yes then no !!

    • In fact out of these three primary you can make all colors – pretty amazing… šŸ™‚ ‘Yes” would have been a good subject, too, but there is always the next round.

      • Thank you very much, Jim. Yeah, the surfboard does stand out, doesn’t it?! I have never been to the Provence, I always wanted to capture a photo of those lavender fields you always see. And vineyards are always great (and what comes off it, too) I’ll have another look on your blog now.
Thanks for your visit and comment!

  3. I love how intense you made that yellow appear.

What fabulous compositions in grey and yellow!

And I’ve always loved that song, too!

Thanks for sharing this great link for the letter ‘Y’.

    A+
