And ‘way back’ is my prompt for this week’s Song-ography. Kathy’s You’ll-shoot-your-eyes-out has given us a joker, a freebie, our choice of song. Yay!! So, the few people reading this blog that actually know me in real life are probably expecting something like Pearl Jam, U2, The Alarm (hmm, maybe I should rethink my choice…), Nirvana, GreenDay or, phew, too many to name. So, I will actually do something different and go back, way back into the 70s and 60s. Yes, I will give you two songs and one picture. Oh, and Kathy, I am sure you know at least one of the two.
o.k. the first song is a 60s song of a pretty famous German singer. Der Traum vom Fliegen by Alexandra, who tragically died aged 27 in a car accident before she could make it to fame in the US. But I bet she would have. With that voice and talent and, yes, looks? A voice that gives me the chills whenever I listen to her songs (which is admittedly not that often). Sorry, but I did not find an English recording of any Alexandra song, so you will have to live, if you choose to, with the German version. Click right here and you will see an English translation of the lyrics with a little extra – they are worth it, promise, you won’t regret it 🙂
And the second song is You light up my life. The original by Kasey Cisyk for the film of the same name (lip synched by Didi Conn), but brought to fame by Debby Boone. Who, I just found out – thanks to Google and IMDB, was born just around the corner from here and is the daughter of Pat Boone, married to the son of Jose Ferrer, and her spouse is 1st cousin to George Clooney – wow. Anyways, I saw the film way back and I don’t remember it, but the song stuck with me. And the 1st time she hits the highs in the refrain still gives me the chills – totally cheesy, but oh so beautiful. There are many of her versions available on YouTube and also many other versions by the likes of Whitney Houston or LeAnn Rimes, but I chose this one, because it has a very original 70s feel to it.
